INITIAL CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCY AS CHIEF ENGINEER
Prior to making your application for your initial Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer you should ensure that:
- You know your Seafarer ID Number,
- You have an acceptable Certificate of Competency as Second Engineer,
- All your Qualifying Sea Service is supported by Sea Service Testimonials and Discharge Book entries,
- You have a valid Medical Fitness Certificate,
- You have the following valid certificates or refresher training for:
- Advanced Fire Fighting,
- Medical First Aid,
- Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats,
- You have all other relevant documentation as set out in the application form.
Prior to the issue of your Certificate of Competency you must have:
- Successfully completed an Oral Examination carried out by the Marine Survey Office, and
- Successfully completed the following modules:
- MARI 8005 Hull Maintenance and Drydocking, and
- MARI 8006 Shipboard Technical Management examinations.
- Completed approved high voltage training at the management level.

REVALIDATION OF A CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCY AS CHIEF ENGINEER
Prior to submitting your application for revalidation of a Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer you should ensure that:
- You have an acceptable Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer,
- You have a valid Medical Fitness Certificate, and
- You have the following valid certificates or refresher training for:
- Advanced Fire Fighting,
- Medical First Aid,Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats,
- If you have not completed high voltage training you may have to do an approved high voltage course at the management level or your Certificate of Competency will be restricted to ships that do not have any high voltage equipment on board.

Prior to making your application for your initial Certificate of Competency as Second Engineer you should ensure that:

You have an acceptable Certificate of Competency as Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch,

All your Qualifying Sea Service is supported by Sea Service Testimonials and Discharge Book entries,

You have a valid Medical Fitness Certificate,

You have the following valid certificates or refresher training for:

Advanced Fire Fighting,
-
Medical First Aid,
- Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats,
-
You have all other relevant documentation as set out in the application form.
