Safety of Shipping and the Seafarer

The Irish Maritime Administration (IMA) is responsible for planning and delivery of all the maritime services of the Department of Transport.

The IMA regulates the maritime transport sector and the national and international safety training standards needed to secure employment in the merchant shipping, fishing and leisure sectors.

The IMA is responsible for implementing the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers Convention (STCW) and the national legislation relating to training and certification of merchant marine and fishing vessel personnel.  The IMA works closely with State sponsored and private bodies to achieve this.
